President's Message

We are very pleased to announce the start of the "Phase II" human clinical study of 4-Aminopyridine (4-AP). The study will be carried out at two centres in Canada and six centres in the United States. It is anticipated that the study will be completed around the Spring of 1998. After this has been completed, and if successful, the final study which is "Phase III" is planned to begin in the summer of 1998.

The study will be under the sponsorship of Acorda Therapeutics. Our thanks to Dr. Ron Cohen, President of Acorda Therapeutics, Dr. Robert Hansebout, Dr. Andrew Blight and Dr. Wise Young for their considerable efforts to put together this Phase II study.

The spinal cord injured population has been looking forward to this for some time now. We will keep you informed on the results.

As you can see, these are interesting and exciting times for CSRO. It has taken the efforts of many spinal cord injured people, their families and friends and the corporate community to get us to where we are. I am asking you to consider what you can do to move our programs forward. If you would like to volunteer for CSRO (anywhere in Canada) please give us a call. If you wish to make a financial donation it would be very helpful in moving our programs forward.

Ray Wickson
President

Growth factors have emerged in recent years as potentially powerful substances for promoting regeneration of peripheral nerves after injury, but are produced in insufficient quantities, or incorrect locations, after injury to the spinal cord.

Last Years Summer Events!
The Chris Beehler Open Golf Tournament

Chris Beehler was rendered a quadriplegic in 1994 as a result of a tragic accident. Since that time, he has accomplished many things of which to be proud. For example, last year's golf tournament, the Second Annual Chris Beehler Golf Tournament raised over $5000. All proceeds were donated to CSRO.

The Third Annual Chris Beehler Golf Tournament was held on August 20, 1997 at the Colonnade Golf & Country Club. It was an even greater success, with 196 golfers and over $8000 raised. Once again, all the proceeds were given to CSRO.

Hole-in-One prizes consisted of a 1997 Chevy work truck, a trip for two to Asia, $20,000 cash, a cruise vacation, 2 business class tickets to Germany, and a vacation for 2 to Jamaica!

A very special thanks to Chris Beehler and the Chris Beehler Tournament Committee for their generosity and for making this third tournament the most successful one yet.

The CSRO & The Friends of Sandra Burton Golf Tournament

On July 11, the CSRO swung into action at the 6th Annual Friends of Sandra Burton Golf Tournament raising $5000. For the past 5 years, the Friends of Sandra Burton Golf Tournament has been a great success. This year, the funds were donated to CSRO. The CSRO worked with the Friends of Sandra Burton Committee in creating the 6th Annual Golf Tournament. Sandra has recently been named Simcoe County Chapter President and we look forward to working with Sandra in the continuing quest for a cure for paralysis.

A special thanks to Sandra, the Friends of Sandra Burton Golf Committee, and to all the sponsors and participants for making this event successful.

The CSRO's 1st Annual Charity Golf Tournament

CSRO held its first Charity Golf Tournament on July 31, filling the day with 18 holes, a silent auction, comedy skits and guest speakers! It was a fun filled day with prizes for the winners of the 4 ball, longest drive, closest to the pin and putting competition. Special thanks go to Joey Dimmerman and Mark Shrott, as well as our sponsors for their dedication and hard work in making this tournament a great success. Our first tournament brought us $13,000.00 closer to our goal.

The 1997 Halloween Car Rally

The CSRO haunted Richmond Hill at its 6th Annual Halloween Car Rally. Participants experienced a spooky treasure hunt on wheels, solving the mysteries and winning prizes. This local event took place at Walt's Grill & Bar in Richmond Hill. Walt's donated $5 for every participant that came to the event. This 130 km hunt was full of bends and curves, brain teasers, and a whole lot of fun! Prizes went to the most money raised through pledges, best dressed car, and the best dressed person!

The CSRO would like to thank Walt's Grill & Bar for hosting this event, the participants for supporting the work of the CSRO and all the bars and organizations that joined in making this day yet another successful rally for a cure!
